As a Food Critic Judge for the New Zealand Food Awards, I’ve had the unique opportunity to sample and evaluate some of the finest, most innovative, and delicious products from Aotearoa New Zealand’s food and beverage sector.
With 2024’s finalists hot off the press (run, don’t walk), this year’s line-up is set to showcase the crème de la crème of the industry, while also showcasing the broader trends that are reshaping the way we eat and drink.
Here are four standout trends that have emerged from the 2024 New Zealand Food Awards:
Convenience meets nutrition
As life gets busier, many of us are as time-poor as ever, yet still recognise the importance of eating well. A strong trend among this year’s finalists shows food and beverage producers stepping up, offering ready-to-eat meals and snacks that are not only quick but genuinely good for you.
From My Food Bag’s Mexi Chicken Protein Bowl, to Homemade Baker's Readymade Muffin Batter’s Apple Banana Carrot (ABC), and Waitoa Free Range Chicken Curry Flavour Kits, the range of convenient, nutritious options continues to grow. These products are designed to fit seamlessly into busy lifestyles, making it easier to enjoy balanced meals and snacks without spending hours in the kitchen.
It’s clear that convenience and nutrition can go hand-in-hand, with producers innovating to help us eat better, even when we’re short on time.
2. The rise of drinks with added benefits
In a world increasingly focused on health and well-being, beverages with added benefits have emerged as a significant trend, offering more than just hydration—they deliver targeted benefits for the mind and body. This trend is evident in the 2024 finalists, where functionality continues to drive innovation and gain big momentum year-on-year.
From Lewis Road Creamery's lactose-free A2 Protein milk designed for easy digestion, to Elta Ego’s alcohol-free G&T infused with adaptogens to lift your mood, and Love Muscle’s Protein Water - Sparkling Pineapple that refreshes while providing a 12g protein whack per can, these products are catering to consumers' growing desire for health-conscious, functional options.
3. Technical innovation: elevating everyday food
Technical innovation is reshaping how we enjoy everyday products, with this year’s finalists showcasing how technology is driving everyday efficiency, while also improving quality, freshness, and dietary inclusivity.
Think New Ground’s Boxed Coffee, which keeps every cup as fresh as the first, or The Alternative Bread Company’s‘Gluten Free Rustic White Bread Mix’ that bake into large loaves with a crispy crust and a soft, light interior—just as satisfying as traditional bread, while also free from common allergens, including dairy, nuts, eggs, and soy. Then there’s the Oat Toddler Drink by Haven Ltd, the world's first 100% plant-based oat toddler drink, scientifically formulated for little ones aged 12+ months, while offering a convenient, plant-based option.
These advances aren’t just about convenience; they’re about raising the bar on quality and accessibility, ensuring great food is available to everyone, no matter their dietary wants or needs.
4. Celebrating artisanal and craftsmanship
Artisanal and premium-quality offerings have steadily maintained their appeal, with small-batch production, traditional techniques, and high-quality ingredients continuing to take centre stage.
Reflecting New Zealand’s rich culinary heritage, products like Akaroa Salmon Hot Smoked Mānuka Portion, Pepler’s Drunk Doris Preserve, a gin-steeped spiced Central Otago Black Doris plums, and A Lady Butcher Salami di Birra: IPA Salami, traditionally fermented pork salami infused with award-winning pale ale, are showcasing a deep dedication to craftsmanship, sustainability and celebrating regional flavours.
However, there’s also great innovation within this category, with products adapting to modern tastes, while also reimagining culinary practices for a new generation of food enthusiasts—think old-world craft meets contemporary culinary innovation.
