The inside scoop: The Little Island entry that wowed judges at the New Zealand Food Awards

Little Island's Nice Blocks Tropical won the Below Zero Category in the 2022 New Zealand Food Awards. The delicious and nutritious ice block is wrapped in a fully recyclable, wrapper-less package, showcasing their commitment to sustainability.

The Little Island case study is an inspiring example for all potential entrants to the New Zealand Food Awards. The product was developed with sustainability at the forefront, and their passion for creating a better world is a clear example of what can be achieved if you set your mind to it.

Little Island's commitment to sustainability is evident in the production of their Nice Blocks Tropical. They source their ingredients ethically, organically, and locally where possible. Overcoming challenges to further reduce their waste, they developed their innovative, wrapper-less packaging.

“The problem was the unique architecture of the carton which none of the manufacturers had attempted before and some ultimately did not have the capability. Perseverance was the key to overcoming the barriers in front of us, until we got to the point of knowing what we wanted. It then became a job of finding a partner willing to go the extra mile to do something new and innovative.”

In addition, they have reduced material usage by 25%, with a 1% waste on their production line.

Little Island was “beyond chuffed” to have won in the 2022 Food Awards.

“At Little Island we strive to make delicious products that are better for you and better for the planet. We’re proud of our low sugar Nice Block Multi and its wrapper-less, fully recyclable package.”
